How to Play

Rock Paper Scissors is a two-player hand game where each player simultaneously forms one of three shapes: Rock (a closed fist), Paper (a flat hand), or Scissors (two fingers extended). The winner is determined by a simple set of rules: Rock crushes Scissors, Scissors cuts Paper, and Paper covers Rock. If both players choose the same shape, the round ends in a tie. In this browser version, you can play against a computer-controlled bot (random, or a smarter bot that adapts to how you play โ€” wins against the smart bot give 2 coins), or challenge a real opponent in Multiplayer mode, where matches are played to 3 wins and each move must be chosen within 10 seconds. After you are paired, there is a 5-second wait before the first round. Choose Find opponent for ranked matches, or Play vs Friend to share a link โ€” friend matches stay between you two, do not count on the leaderboard, and Play again rematches the same friend. Create an account with a username and password so your profile stays yours. Pick your move by clicking one of the three icons, watch a short countdown while the bot "thinks" (or wait for your opponent's move in Multiplayer), and see the result revealed instantly. Wins, losses, and draws against the random bot, the smart bot, and real multiplayer opponents are saved separately in your browser. Ranked multiplayer match wins also grant 10 coins and are added to the public leaderboard (daily, monthly, and all time). Open the Shop to unlock move skins, change the background, or equip a glowing name tag with coins earned by winning.

History of Rock Paper Scissors

Games built around a small set of hand gestures with a fixed winning order have existed for centuries, with some of the earliest documented versions tracing back to China. A close relative, "jan-ken", became firmly established in Japan by the early 20th century and is often credited as the direct ancestor of the modern rock-paper-scissors most of the world plays today, complete with the same rock, paper, and scissors shapes. The game spread to the West gradually through the 1900s and became a standard, informal way to settle small disputes or make quick decisions โ€” from choosing who goes first in a board game to deciding who gets the last slice of pizza. Its appeal lies in its simplicity: no equipment, no setup, and a result in seconds. It's also mathematically elegant, since it's one of the simplest known examples of a "non-transitive" game โ€” no single move is objectively best, each one only has power over one specific opponent and is vulnerable to another. That balance is part of why it has remained popular, and largely unchanged, for so long.

Probability & Strategy

If both players pick completely at random, each outcome โ€” win, lose, or tie โ€” has an equal 33.3% chance on any given round, and no move is mathematically better than another over time. Against a bot that also picks randomly, there's no clever trick that reliably beats chance in the long run. Where strategy does come into play is against human opponents, because people rarely play truly randomly, even when they think they do. Researchers who've studied large numbers of real matches have found common psychological patterns: players who just won tend to repeat the same move on the next round, while players who just lost tend to switch โ€” often specifically to the move that just beat them. Recognizing these tendencies is the basis of most rock-paper-scissors "strategy" you'll find online. Of course, once an opponent is aware of these patterns too, they can deliberately play against expectation, and the advantage disappears. In the end, the game rewards unpredictability more than any fixed strategy โ€” which is part of why it works so well as a genuinely fair way to make a quick decision.
